When I was at school hyperactive children were called ‘fidgets’ which described them perfectly. ADHD was unknown then! Diagnosis of ADHD to-day is not exactly rocket science but it is not scientific either and there lies the problem! Overdiagnosis ADHD is a problem because of the inexact nature of testing for ADHD. There is a suspicion that overdiagnosis ADHD is much more common than previously thought.
Today between 3-5% of children suffer from ADHD. Many children are not treated at all either through ignorance or neglect on the parents’ part. But the number of children being treated by psychostimulant drugs is alarming simple because conventional medication with ADHD drugs is only part of the answer and at times a very risky one.
But back to diagnosis. Here are some parenting tips ADHD:
1. If you suspect your child has ADHD you need to get help and that help has to be a qualified person who will be able to administer the ADHD test as laid down by the American Academy of Pediatrics. What do I mean by a qualified person? They should either be a pediatrician who specializes in child behaviour a child neurologist or a child psychiatrist. You have to make sure that they have experience and qualifications in dealing with ADHD. You can also ask if they consult the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 4th Edition) which sets out clearly the criteria for diagnosing ADHD.
2. The child’s teacher very often will be one of the first persons to note any learning problems and/or problems with peers. ADHD children are often isolated and excluded because of their sometimes anti-social behaviour. You need to ask what exactly the behavioural problems are and report them to the pediatrician.
3. Sometimes children are naughty difficult downright rude and disobedient. It is when this behaviour lasts for longer than six months and is interfering with the child’s development that alarm bells start ringing. Again the expert through questioning will be able to determine whether this is ADHD or not.
4. What does the ADHD test consist of? The child has to have a thorough physical exam so that other conditions can be ruled out. Family medical history is investigated (often parents discover that they themselves have ADHD!). Interviews are done with the child’s teacher (if possible) and both parents. Then there are standardized screening tests IQ social adjustment and so on.

Once a diagnosis is made and by following the above steps there is a minimum risk of overdiagnosis ADHD. The next problem is to be aware of the different treatment options.Your doctor or pediatrician may not (and probably will not!) mention that there are many possible ways of helping an ADHD child and very often a combo treatment is the best. That may be medication (either psychostimulants or natural ADHD remedies) behaviour therapy diet and ‘green activities’. It is important to be up to speed about the ADHD drugs and their side effects.
