Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neuro-behavioral disorders seen in children. The symptoms of this disorder often start to be noticeable before the child turns seven and may last until adulthood. Children with ADHD may show signs of any of these ADHD symptoms: overly active or hyperactivity inattentive or have difficulty in paying attention cannot control impulsive behaviors and appearing to be always daydreaming.
How to Recognize the Signs of ADHD
It may be difficult to tell if the child really has ADHD since it is normal for some children to be very active inattentive or to misbehave constantly. The child’s demeanor may only be a sign of misbehavior and can be managed with proper discipline. However if the behavior of the child does not show any improvement with the passing of time the chances are that the child may indeed be suffering from ADHD.
There are three kinds of ADHD symptoms. These are hyperactive-impulsive inattentive and a combination of hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive. Parents and teachers should look for these three signs to determine if the child might have ADHD.
Children who are hyperactive-impulsive may show six or more of the following behaviors:
o Running or climbing inappropriately
o Cannot stay seated
o Always in motion
o Talking endlessly
o Has difficulty waiting for his turn
o Fidgeting and squirming
o Blurting out answers even before the whole question is asked
o Interrupting and disrupting people
Children who are inattentive may show six or more of the following behaviors:
o Is easily distracted
o Forgetful
o Daydream a lot
o Do not pay attention
o Cannot finish tasks
o Easily gets bored especially when the task is repetitive
o Act and display emotions without thinking of the consequences
o Appears sluggish and somewhat lethargic constantly
Children who have a combination of these symptoms may be restless and may run climb and have difficulty in taking turns. A combination of the hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive type is the most common type of ADHD in children.
If you think your child shows six or more signs of the above-mentioned ADHD symptoms and if his behavior does not improve over time consult a doctor. Especially choose a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD.

To date there has been no known definitive medical test that can help doctors to rule out the presence of ADHD in a patient or to confirm that a patient suffers from ADHD. A doctor will usually assess the child’s behavior through psychological testing or by closely monitoring your child’s demeanor. The parents and teachers play a great role in determining the signs of ADHD in children as they are the persons who can closely monitor the behavior of the child. The doctor may assess the child’s behavior through the information given by the parents and the teachers.
If the child is diagnosed to indeed have ADHD the doctor may work closely with the parents in determining the right treatment for the child. The doctor may prescribe medicines and may advise therapy of various types.
