When my child was diagnosed with ADHD I felt like I was stabbed in my heart. This condition with a very uncertain cause carries a very uncertain prognosis. To date there is no treatment known to cure this disease. Long-term treatments usually with stimulants are fraught with safety concerns and abuse potential. Knowing the controversies and uncertainties surrounding this disorder I felt that the future is very bleak for my child. And a mother’s greatest pain is in not being able to shield her child from this.
How then should I manage my child? Should I opt for the conventional drugs? Or should I try alternative treatments?
There are many alternatives to the use of prescription drugs in ADHD. I for one have enrolled my child in a cognitive behavioral therapy. But I want to look for other therapies to complement this.
The use of natural supplements for ADHD seems like a safe option. Stimulant drugs improve symptoms of ADHD by increasing arousal. Most of these natural supplements for ADHD act in the same way without the side effects often seen in conventional drugs. Maybe these supplements would be worth a try.
There are several herbal supplements used in the treatment of ADHD. Ginkgo biloba a herb which is traditionally used to treat dementia is believed to improve blood flow to the brain. Increased blood flow would then result to improved brain function memory and concentration. However there are limited studies on the effectiveness of Ginkgo biloba in ADHD. A small study which combined Ginkgo biloba with American ginseng showed that these two herbs might benefit ADHD children.

Another herb being considered is St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum). This herb is touted as a natural antidepressant. Another natural supplement for ADHD is a group of compounds called antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Extracts from pine bark and grape seed are believed to contain antioxidants which could prevent oxidative damage to the brain and the nervous system. Children with ADHD and their parents report improvements with the use of these two extracts. However there is still no objective evidence to support such claims.
Vitamins and minerals are another source of antioxidants. Aside from preventing free radical damage vitamins and minerals also correct deficiencies found in most children with ADHD. A nutritional assessment done on children with ADHD found that a lot of these children have vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
It seems that taking natural supplements for ADHD does not guarantee effects. Most of these products and compounds have no well-designed trials no back up their claims of effectiveness. And even if they come from natural compounds some still carry risks of side effects especially when taken in large quantities. It is still wise to consult a physician before starting any form of treatment. Their experience in treating this condition can aid us a lot in deciding on the best treatment for our kids.
