My son is effectively managing his ADHD without medications. He is 11 years old. We have a set schedule for most everything. That way he doesn’t have to waste energy trying to remember what he is supposed to be doing at what time.
Even on weekends and holidays he goes to bed and gets up at the same time each day. I know this seems like a small thing, but it helps a whole lot.
He does all of one type of homework at one time, then takes a break before doing the next subject. He starts with his least favorite subject and continues to the most favorite. So he does math first and reading last.
He wiggles and taps his foot while studying to help focus himself.

Diet plays a big part in the behavior of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD. Colors and preservatives play a big part and is something that you should research.
There are many books around about these things and I am sure if you are in a position that maybe a natural therapist would also be of assistance.
There is also a program called The Dore Program and that also is said to help.

Its not so much managing symptoms as it is working your life around it.
I do work in a room with no tv, radio, cell phone etc. that can distract me and I sometimes make games in my mind during a conversation to keep me engaged.
